The Yellowstone Bison Transfer Program is currently underway to reduce the bison population through an administrative harvest. As in past years, the Tribal Council has approved this year’s Yellowstone Bison Transfer Program operations. Transferred bison will first be provided to tribal departments for various operation needs. Once that demand is met, unsuccessful CSKT bison hunters would receive preference for a bison and then any CSKT members would be eligible. All tribal departments, hunters or other persons will need to pay for all the costs of the transfer program to receive a bison carcass or processed meat.
Tribal members who are interested in receiving a transfer bison need to contact the Division of Fish, Wildlife, Recreation and Conservation (DFWRC) office by phone or in person to be placed on the list for bison meat. To sign up for the bison transfer program call 675-2700 ext. 7200 or visit the DFWRC office at 406 6th Avenue East in Polson.
When a shipment occurs, tribal members who have signed up to be on the list will be randomly drawn from the participant name pool and will be called to pay a deposit to reserve a bison carcass. The expected deposit fee for an adult carcass is $250 and a calf fee is $150. The only method of payments for any fees or other costs will be with a credit/debit card or money order.
The unsuccessful bison hunters during the 2018-2019 hunt season will need to have verification that they went to hunt and did not harvest a bison for the season. Verification requires Tribal Game Warden confirmation.
