TITLE:                    Aide (Fire/Fuels)

                             1 or more Contract Positions

LOCATION:            Forestry-Division of Fire 

SALARY:                $15.82 per hour

CLOSING DATE:     Thursday, May 9, 2024 at 5:30 p.m.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:

This is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) within the definition of the CSKT Drug Testing policy and is subject to random alcohol and drug testing. The successful applicant if not already employed by the Tribes must pass a pre-hire drug test and will be required to serve a six-month probationary period.

Duties:

Hazardous Fuels Reduction:

• Serve as a crewmember on fuels reduction treatments.
• Attend daily briefings.
• Felling of small trees using a chainsaw.
• Hand pile woody debris.
• Construct control lines for prescribed burns.
• Serve as a crewmember in prescribed fire implementation.
• Mop-up prescribed burns.
• Patrol prescribed burns.
• Sleep in remote areas on fuels projects if warranted.
• Monitors fuels reduction treatments.
• May operate 4x4 pickups and other light vehicles if qualified.
• Work long hours including weekends completing fuels reduction treatments.
• Clean, maintain, recondition, and store hand and power tools and equipment.
• Travel off reservation to support local, regional or national hazard fuel reduction efforts.

Wildfire suppression:

• Serve as a crew member on an engine, fire suppression module or helitack crew.
• Attend daily briefings.
• Utilize a variety of specialized tools, equipment, and techniques while actively working with hand and power tools such as a shovel, axe, pulaski, chainsaw, in fire suppression.
• Serve as a crewmember suppressing wildfire.
• Cut saw line using a chainsaw.
• Build containment line on wildfires.
• Mop-up wildfires.
• Patrol wildfires.
• Sleep in remote areas while in fire assignments.
• Serve as a crewmember assigned to carry out specialized assignments such as tree falling, backfire or burnout, mobile and stationary engine attack, construction of helispots, specialized helitack operations, and longline hookups.
• May operate 4x4 pickups and other light vehicles if qualified.
• Work long hours including weekends suppressing fires on the Flathead Indian Reservation.
• Clean, maintain, recondition, and store hand and power tools and equipment.
• Travel off reservation to support local, regional or national fire suppression efforts.

Common duties:

• Participates in safety training in the techniques, practices, methods of fire suppression and fuels treatments in a safe manner.
• Participate in Safety Tailgate sessions and After Action Reviews (AAR). Ensures own and others’ safety in all aspects of assignments.
• Receive specialized training to include but not limited to CPR/First Aid, Defensive driving, and sexual harassment.
• Assist with inventories of supplies and equipment.
• Services and makes minor repairs to engines and crew vehicles.
• Assigned to other management activities which include, but are not limited to: maintaining campground facilities; mowing of grass and weeds; trail maintenance; building and lookout maintenance; road clearing; removal and disposal of hazard trees (i.e. timber felling, thinning and slashing; hand piling; wood chipper operations); collections and distribution of firewood; and, like duties.
• Assist fire prevention officials with area patrols and fire detection activities. Assists with fire education activities as assigned.
• Assist with all risk incident support activities to include hazmat, search and rescue, etc.
• Assist with other forestry related activities as needed.
• Performs other duties assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (AS REFLECTED ON THE TRIBAL EMPLOYMENT APPLICATION):

• A high school diploma (or equivalent).
• Three (3) months of general work experience, which can be any work experience. I.E. mowing lawns, bucking hay, etc. to serve on a fuels, engine or monitoring crew. One (1) season of firefighting experience required to serve on the Helitack crew.
• Training required for the NWCG FFT2 and FAL3 position is not required for initial hire, but must be obtained within the established probation period.
• Incumbent is subject to annual medical examination and work capacity test for arduous positions. Incumbent must pass both to meet the standards of the Technician position.
• This is a testing designated position (TDP) under the Tribal Drug and Alcohol Policy and is subject to pre-hire and random drug and alcohol testing requirements.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS (AS DETERMINED BY THE INTERVIEW):

• Ability to perform duties under stressful and adverse operating conditions, such as long work hours, heavy workloads, emergency situations, adverse working and environmental conditions.
• Must possess the ability to verbally communicate sufficiently to work as a member of a team.
