Moiese, MT –The Fuels Program will be conducting prescribed fire activities on the National Bison Range the next two days. 204 acres are intended to be burned between two units. The management objectives of these fire activities are to begin to restore periodic fire to a fire dependent ecosystem, to aid in the treatment of invasive species, and for ongoing research studies.  

During prescribed fire activities, visitors to the refuge may experience smoky conditions. As a result of these prescribe fire activities, visitors to the refuge will notice burned areas along the tour routes and may temporarily experience reduced use by certain wildlife species within the burned units.  

  1. Resource Objectives:
  2. Restoration of native grasslands through prescribed fire activities.
  3. Provide opportunities for Bison Range staff to reduce Invasive plant species (weed spraying) impacts.
  4. Provide for future grazing opportunities for bison herd.
  5. Prescribed Fire Objectives:
  6. Achieve 60% or greater fire coverage across areas burned.
  7. Reduce fire hazard over the project area.
