Hello, the 2023-24 Yellowstone Bison Hunt Regulations are re-opened for public comment, as some people missed the announcement in the Char-koosta.  The new deadline is noon (12:00pm on Wednesday, 8/30/23).  We need time to summarize comments that are submitted for Council time on Thursday.

The attached copy calls out some clarifications and change in font color have been provided.

There may have been some confusing language (one items was written twice now stuck out) and an update in the format might have lead people to miss an important notation about two bison permits being available upon request.  It was written that one permit is valid for one either sex bison, as is logical.  A Tribal member may take one bison, either sex with one permit.  A Tribal member, if they feel they can physically handle two bison, may request a second, either sex bison tag, after the orientation and they may get those permits at the same time….as they always have.

Last item that has come to our attention, is the designated hunter section.  This year we have a form and a flow chart for verifying and approving people who need a designated hunter.  We will require proof of age, disability or other reason, as it has been with all other transfer of permits in the past.  There was a miss-conception that a designated hunter could only take one permit to Yellowstone at a time.  This leading to frustration by some that it was going to be cost prohibitive to hunt for multiple people if they had to drive to Yellowstone and back home to get another tag.  That is not written anywhere in these draft regulations and was never part of the regulations for this year’s hunt.  We just need to verify and approve people who claim they ‘can’t’ hunt, formally with an application, not just a cold phone call to our office.  That will no longer be an acceptable transfer of permits.  We appreciate our hunters willing to hunt for those who can’t and apologize for any misunderstanding.
